Writing
"[Hulsizer] has written two cruising-inspired books, Glaciers, Bears and Totems: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska and Voyages to Windward: Sailing Adventures on Vancouver Island’s West Coast, both of which should be in the canon of any cruiser contemplating a trip to either of these fabled areas.  Interestingly, Hulsizer does a great job of blending her degree in oceanography with her sailing experience, yielding writing with strong science and environmental content."
--48 Degrees North

"Hulsizer is a keen observer, chronicler, and interpreter of the natural and social phenomenon. She writes so well that the reader experiences a sense of participation in, rather than merely observation of, her adventures afloat and ashore."

Biography

Elsie Hulsizer acquired her fascination with the sea growing up on the shores of Puget Sound and learning to sail on an 18ft wooden sloop.  That fascination led to a master’s degree in biological oceanography and a career in environmental management. In 2001, she rounded out her education with a certificate in Fine Art Photography from the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle and began working on her first book, Voyages to Windward: Sailing Adventures on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. She lives in Seattle, cruises every summer and writes in the winter. Her early interest in the sea grew to a fascination with the cultural, geological and historical factors that shape a region.

In 1978-79 Elsie and her husband, Steve, a marine engineer, sailed their Chesapeake 32ft sloop, Velella, from Boston to Seattle via the Panama Canal and Hawaii.  In Seattle they traded Velella for Osprey, an Annapolis 44 sloop in which they have taken repeated cruises to the West Coast of Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) and Southeast Alaska.

Between sailing adventures on the Osprey, Elsie serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Seattle’s Center for Wooden Boats.

In addition to her books, Elsie’s articles and photographs have appeared in local and national boating magazines in the U.S. and Canada including Cruising World, Pacific Yachting, Northwest Yachting and others. Links or pdfs of some of those articles can be read on the Destination pages of this site.
